Mexicans Are Very Mad At Americans In Mexico City, Or Are They?
“You’re a ******* plague and locals hate you.”
I had to rub my eyes to make sure I read the sign right.
It was a piece of paper plastered onto a wall in Mexico City.
“New to the city? Working remotely? …. LEAVE” it said.
Oh wait. Important part… I didn’t physically see the sign. It was shared on social media.
As a remote worker living in Mexico City since 2021, I couldn’t help but feel personally attacked.
I need my safe space.
The Internet Blew Up About It
The LA Times shared this article the other day with the headline: “Californians and other Americans are flooding Mexico City. Some locals want them to go home.”
The internet hopped all over it. Twitter user “MegMegMeeeegggg” said “Good, locals need to be wayyyy meaner to Americans. We ruin, like, everything we touch globally.”
Sheesh Meg. More meanness is definitely the answer here and in any other delicate situation in life.
Since everybody loves to bash the United States, we had people with absolutely no experience living in Mexico City re-sharing the news and talking about how insufferable digital nomads are.
